Curriculum Level of This Unit = FIVEUnderlying Concepts
The educational aims of the unit are:
  • To introduce students to the skills, strategies and rules of the game of korfball
  • To engage students in meaningful games of korfball that embrace the philosophy of the sport and allow students to develop social and cooperative skills in a team environment.
  • To introduce students to the historical social and cultural context of korfball.
  • Allow opportunities for students to investigate why people may choose to play particular sports or not and identify reasons for this.

Reflection on factors that influence peoples choices relating to health and physical activity.

Developing personal skills that improve wellbeing through physical activity.

Relating to Others:
Korfball develops skills, knowledge, attitudes and values related to working with others in a team environment.

Belonging:
Involvement in a korfball team means participating and contributing enhancing a sense of belonging to the class.

Using Knowledge and Information:
Giving students opportunity to reflect and use information to make judgements about the reasons why people chose to participate in different physical activities.
Assessment For Learning Opportunities:
  • Students will be able to keep track of coaching feedback and feed-forward throughout the unit via their ‘Hot Tips’ workbook.
  • Students will rate their progress towards being a competent korfball player using their ‘Hot Tips’ workbook.
  • Teachers may use information gained throughout the unit using observation and the ‘Hot Tips’ workbook to make judgements on the students’ progress towards the competent standard.
Assessment Standard (What is expected of a student to achieve the standard at this level.)
5B1 – Movement Skills
A student will be a competent korfball player at this level when they can:
  • Pass and catch successfully and efficiently
  • Shoot long shots and running-in shots with a reasonable level of success.
  • Use movement skills such a V-cuts and veering off to make space.
  • Track a player in a one on one defensive situation.
5B4 – Social and Cultural Factors
A student will demonstrate understanding of social and cultural reasons why people chose to play different sports when they:
  • Are able to identify personal factors that affect their own choices, e.g. motivation, enjoyment, body shape, fitness levels, injuries, disabilities, cultural background, level of wealth and what they know about.
  • Are able to identify other factors that affect their own choices, e.g. Parents, friends, extended family, where they live, what is on TV, what society values.
5C3 – Interpersonal Skills
A student will demonstrate interpersonal skills to the level where they can effectively and meaningfully contribute to a korfball team when they:
  • Are involved fully in the game and working hard for their team.
  • Communicating with team mates and responding to attack opportunities created by them.
  • Using team mates to help attack the korf, i.e. pass and cut running in shots.
  • Contributing to team defence by calling to team-mates to indicate opponents’ attacking options.
  • Giving positive encouragement to team-mates.
