Lets Play Korfball

A practical resource to help secondary schools include korfball into their Physical Education programmes.

Introduction

Korfball is a unique sport. It is the world’s only truly mixed team sport. It is a skilful, competitive, fun, energetic and cooperative sport. Effective teamwork is crucial as is personal responsibility in each individual role. There is no place for ‘passengers’ in korfball.

Korfball is an ideal teaching medium in secondary schools. Its uniqueness and the dynamic nature of the sport means it captures student interest. It can be linked easily to the New Zealand Health and Physical Education Curriculum and the Key Competencies.

Explicitly, this unit of work is focused around three achievement objectives: B1, B4 and C3. Other objectives can also be achieved through the learning experiences associated with Korfball.

Korfball can also be used in the senior school as a context for learning that can then be assessed by appropriate achievement or unit standards. See Appendix 2.

For an excellent introduction to the history and philosophy of the game of Korfball see the article ‘Korfball – What makes this such a great sport?’ by clicking on the following link.
