LESSON EIGHT – Social and Cultural Factors – Theory Lesson
This lesson can be incorporated into the unit at any time. It does not have to be done last.
PART A: Introduce the idea that the choices we make in regard to sport and recreation activities are influenced by a number of social and cultural factors.
Discuss what is meant by social and cultural factors and look at examples of these. You could use a ‘think, pair share’ method to do this.
Personal reflection: Get the students to reflect on the social and cultural factors that most influence their choice of sporting/recreation activities. They use the work sheet in their ‘Hot Tips for Korfball’ workbook for this.
As a follow on from this, students could break into groups and share their reflections.
PART B: Home work task. Why might people choose to play Korfball?
Korfball is a fantastic sport for a lot of reasons yet it is not as popular as basketball or netball. Why? One reason could be that people simply haven’t heard about the game. This home work task involves producing an A4 advertising poster to promote the game of Korfball. Information on this poster could include:
Why is korfball an enjoyable, attractive game?
How is the game played?
Who can play korfball?
What are the skills required?
How do you get involved? I.e. Where and when can you play it? Who do you contact?
